We've posted the minutes to the board meetings for you guys to read up on in a new forum topic.  Only VEA members have access to read on line.  The board is meeting again this week to finalize the AGM and all the info to be provided at it.  The AGM will not be a hall rented who-ha.  It will be more informal.  Present information, get votes on VEA[BC] business, answer questions, talk informally.

We'll notify you as soon as it is arranged.

Dear Members,

I know your board has sounded quite of late, but I wanted to assure you that we have not been idle.  Currently we are working for a method to post minutes from board meetings to the webpage to save funds vs. postage.  We have been very active on the union issue, promoting BC, and working to better the local community.

We will be holding our second AGM in the next three weeks where we will provide you with all the in depth details as well as get your input on how to improve upon our process and the VEA over all.  We will update you on time and place as it is arranged.  We will not be formally booking a hall but having a more intimate gathering with less formal boundaries.

Thank you for your time, and support.  Your volunteer VEA[BC] continues to push for the betterment of our industry and getting your voice heard on the issues.

Sincerely,

Ivan Hayden

I can not confirm if anyone in the New Media sector was contacted.  They didn't contact us though, so I'm not confident that they did.

I will speculate a bit.

New Media is a big term and I don't think the union has a clue what it means; I couldn't give you an exact definition because I am smart enough to know that there are new medias out there that I know nothing about nor how they pertain to Visual Effects let alone productions.  As they did with VFX and CGI I think the union just cast a broad sweeping net to see if they could catch everything at once and to establish precedence over everything for the future.

Just as Battlestar set us up for this, I think that the project Sanctuary did the same for "new media".  Sanctuary was a web based series and the unions had no authority over the productions in this medium.  However, many an independent project has found a bitter death caused by using union workers but without an agreement with the union.  Meaning, no dues paid, meal penalties etc  Suddenly they make it big and then the union comes a callin'.   I think that the Sanctuary producers were far seeing enough to know they had something, and rather than risk getting killed by the union if they became series or developed into something bigger, they contacted the union and made an agreement that their new media production would behave like a regular union show when they didn't have to.  It is a sound business practice from the producer's end but, I think, it gave the union their in and now, at the very least, all web based film type projects could find themselves in the same mess as many an independent film project has if they suddenly make it big.

The board is meeting to discuss what our next plans will be and I will bring this topic up at the meeting.

TAX ISSUE: Have you all seen the Tax Credit issue posted to the Discussion thread?
This is a huge concern for BC.  The VEA will be discussing this topic and how best we should put our voice to the issue but each of you should contact your mla and give them hell.  The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Any information on if the "new media" community was consulted before being wrapped into this? Are they into it?

Last month the Ontario government matched Quebec's 25% tax credit on all
production-related services and labour. To date, our provincial
government is reluctant to match and would like to wait to see what
impact the imbalance will have. We're already feeling the impact:
follow-up seasons of established U.S. series are moving and domestic
production companies are moving their projects to Toronto. We believe
the only way to influence our government is to initiate a mass email
campaign.

Please prepare an email that will go to the government contacts below as
well as your own MLA .  If you do not know who your MLA is, go to
http://www.leg.bc.ca/mla/3-1-1.htm  type in your postal code, and then
hit "look up MLA ":

Hon Kevin Kruegar:    TSA.Minister@gov.bc.ca
<mailto:TSA.Minister@gov.bc.ca>
Hon Colin Hansen:     Fin.Minister@gov.bc.ca
<mailto:Fin.Minister@gov.bc.ca>
Premier Campbell:     Premier@gov.bc.ca <mailto:Premier@gov.bc.ca>

Following are talking points you can touch on, in your own words, in
your emails:

1. Describe what you do in the industry.
2. Voice your concern about what impact the improved tax credit in
Ontario will have on the BC industry: i.e. runaway production.
3. Describe how this uncertainty makes you feel: i.e. the fear of
losing work and qualified personnel.
4. Ask the government to immediately match the Ontario tax credit.
5. Suggest that, as an industry, we will work with government to
find a better long-term solution to create a level playing field among
the provinces.

This situation is urgent. Please send your emails as soon as possible.

Thank you!
