Resources/ Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I join VEA[BC]?
To have your voice heard . There is currently NO other organization whose primary job it is to promote the interests of BC’s visual effects community and industry. Now is the time for us to define our own future, rather than letting others do it for us.To help your career. VEA[BC] will provide a one-stop shop of resources for job seekers, freelancers, employers and clients: job boards, availability lists, online resumes and portfolios, company profiles, and much, much more.
To build our community. VEA[BC] will strive to build the bonds of community between artists, employers, companies, clients, students, and schools.
To strengthen our industry. British Columbia is a visual effects powerhouse, but with the rise of competing markets in Asia and eastern Europe we can’t afford to be complacent.
VEA[BC] will work hard to ensure that BC’s visual effects industry continues to go from strength to strength, competing toe-to-toe with the best in the world.
Isn't the VEA[BC] the same thing as the VES?
No, we are two separate entities.Think of it this way, the Visual Effects Society is about the art of Visual Effects as a whole where the Visual Effects Association is about the business of Visual Effects and particularly, about Visual Effects in BC.
The VEA(BC) is not in competition with the VES, rather we support their hard and important work in bringing attention to our wonderful and challenging industry. Certainly there is crossover, we offer different resources that we hope will compliment those of the VES.
How do I join VEA[BC]?
You can join right now if you have two years of visual effects work experience. Visit our Join Us Now page or more details. Will VEA[BC] set industry-wide rates for employment in visual effects?
VEA[BC] will not be “setting rates”, but we will conduct periodic surveys of industry norms and publish the results in the form of guidelines for the benefit of both employees and employers. Will VEA[BC] help me if I have problems with my employer?
VEA[BC] is not a labour arguing body, but we will endeavour to provide both employers and employees with accurate, up-to-date information on their respective rights and obligations, and we will always be happy to refer parties to the appropriate organizations if arbitration is required. Will VEA[BC] help bring more visual effects work to BC?
We will work hard to make BC an ever-more attractive place for producers to bring their visual effects work. We will do this by:1. Lobbying for the most competitive tax credits in the world.
2. Providing a one-stop-shop of critical information and resources for producers and studios.
3. Facilitating the continued growth of a highly-skilled workforce.
4. Promoting BC as a producer of world-class visual effects.
